Bingo! Fun & games to help Friends for Youth

by
We would like to extend special thanks to the Farm Hill Women’s Club for selecting Friends for Youth as the beneficiary of its 2010 Charity Game Luncheon! It has been an honor to be selected in their final year of hosting this event. Representing the organization at Saturday’s event was our Executive Director and members of the Mentoring Services Team, members of our Board of Directors, and even a mentor and mentee! We were thrilled to be able to join with members of the Farm Hill Women’s Club and their supporters for an afternoon filled with laughter, fun, games, prizes, and delicious food. Over 50 people attended this special event, which was held at Independence Hall in Woodside.

Thank you to our community partners!

by
As with most nonprofit organizations, Friends for Youth relies on the support of the community. Corporations, local businesses, foundations, and of course, individuals, partner with us to help our local at-risk youth. You can only imagine how deeply grateful we are for the community support we receive, especially during these challenging times. We would like to acknowledge two of our long-time community partners - the Sobrato Family Foundation and Oracle USA - who recently awarded us important grants. The Sobrato grant is a challenge grant which means if we raise $25,000 in new donations this year, we will be awarded an additional $25,000 for next year. Every donation dollar gets us closer to this goal. You can help! Learn more about us and help us help local at-risk youth through the power of mentoring at www.friendsforyouth.org.

Group Activities: Evening of stars, morning of golf

by
Mentoring Services is pleased to announce that this month 18 Friendships attended Friends for Youth Group Activities! First, at the “We’re All Made Out of Stars” planetarium show, mentors and mentees gathered to mix and mingle and then took in the show led by a College of San Mateo astronomy professor. Junior and Senior Friends got a preview of what the night sky will look like in the coming weeks. Second, at Malibu Castle, several Friendships turned into early-bird mini-golfers and putt-putted their way through the course. Also, each Friendship received a handful of free arcade tokens!

Group Activities help promote relationship building, allow Friendships to meet other participants in the program, are always fun, and are usually free! Thanks to all our junior-astronomers and mini-golfers, and we hope to see your Friendship at an activity soon!

Friends for Youth part of MCP National Advisory Board

by
My name is Becky Cooper and I am Executive Director of Friends for Youth.  This year we began working with Friends Outside, an organization that assists the families of people who are incarcerated.  Through Friends Outside, we provide mentoring services to children of prisoners who need a supportive adult in their lives.  I am excited that as a result of our collaboration, I was recently appointed to the Mentoring Children of Prisoners National Advisory Board of Directors. The purpose of the Board is to provide feedback and insight into emerging trends and issues in the field of mentoring children of prisoners.

Approximately 2 million children and youth in the U.S. have at least one incarcerated parent. In addition to suffering disruption in the relationship with their parent, these young people often struggle with the economic, social, and emotional burdens of the incarceration. Data indicate that mentoring programs can help these youth by reducing their first-time drug and alcohol use, improving their relationships and academic performance, and reducing the likelihood that they will initiate violence.

Congress established the Mentoring Children of Prisoners Program through the Promoting Safe and Stable Families Amendments and the Family and Youth Services Bureau began funding mentoring projects in 2003.

I am looking forward to working with Advisory Board colleagues to build ongoing positive practices to benefit this special population of children and youth.
